Riegler, Osburn Help Chargers Keep Season Alive vs. Black Hawk

Isaac Riegler (McLean, Ill./Olympia) delivered the go-ahead hit in the eighth and Kelly Osburn (East Moline, Ill./United Township) pitched four shutout innings in relief to help keep the Carl Sandburg College baseball team’s season alive as the Chargers split the first two games of their Region IV tournament sectional series with Black Hawk on Saturday afternoon.

The fifth-seeded Braves took the opener 9-7 before the fourth-seeded Chargers (27-12-1) came through with a 6-5 victory in Game 2.

The best-of-three series will be decided at noon Sunday at the Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex, with the winner advancing to next weekend’s Region IV tournament final.

Key Moments

  • Down 5-4 in the fifth, Hunter Darst (Avon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) and Riegler each came up with RBI singles to put Sandburg back on top 6-5.
  • Back-to-back one-out singles brought up Black Hawk’s Bryce White, who hit a three-run homer to left to give the Braves an 8-6 lead. It was the second homer of the game for White, who drove in five runs. BHC added another run in the inning to go up 9-6.

Center fielder Noah Hoepfner (East Moline, Ill./United Township) went 4 for 6 with a double and a pair of runs scored.

Key Moments

  • With the Chargers up 5-3 in the sixth, Black Hawk tied it on Jake Conley’s two-out, two-run base hit to right.
  • In the eighth, the Braves put runners on second and third with nobody out and had the bases loaded with one out but were unable to push across the go-ahead run as Sandburg turned a 5-2-3 double play to end the inning.
  • Still tied at 5, Devon Ballard (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to left, moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a bunt. After a flyout to right, Riegler punched a single to right field for the go-ahead run.

Sandburg Standout
Osburn came up big with four scoreless frames in relief of starter Nolan Struhs (Avon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon). The righthander allowed a run and two walks while fanning one.
